Asia's main political parties have endorsed attempts by senior Conservative MEP Nirj Deva to kick start a Korean peace process.

The International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) pledged the support of 36 parties in 23 countries for efforts by the European Parliament's Delegation on the Korean Peninsula, which Mr Deva chairs, to work towards drafting a peace treaty.

The European Parliament's Development, Budget and Foreign Affairs committees have voted for a new direction for development funding by creating a public-private partnership with the European Fund for Sustainable Development (EFSD).

Conservative Development Spokesman, Nirj Deva MEP’s call for a partnership with the private sector for development funding was backed last year by the European Commission and the Parliament. Unfortunately although today's vote endorses the idea, Conservative MEPs could not support it overall as it does not focus spending on projects that have market value.

The adoption of the UN Sustainable Development Goals is a landmark moment, but the goals will only be met through policies that encourage free trade, property rights, good governance, and entrepreneurship; according to Nirj Deva MEP, who is attending the UN General Assembly as Vice-President of the European Parliament’s Development committee.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 objectives that will build on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) adopted in 2000. Alongside 169 targets it aims to mobilise all actors from states, international organisations, NGOs and interested parties in the fight against poverty.

European Commission president Jean Claude Juncker is being urged to use Wednesday's State of the European Union speech to back a plan which could channel €300 billion a year to the developing world.

It is understood Mr Juncker is considering taking forward a strategy steered through the European Parliament by Conservative Development spokesman Nirj Deva which involves using the private sector to supplement public funds for Africa and other areas.
