Baroness Thatcher: tribute from Conservative MEPs' leader Richard Ashworth
Richard Ashworth, leader of the UK's Conservative MEPs, today said: "Baroness Thatcher was an inspiration to a generation.
"Her vision and leadership almost single-handedly transformed a dysfunctional economy. In alliance with President Reagan she helped re-shape our world.
"What is more, she taught Britain to have a pride in itself once again.

"While from humble origins herself, she taught a whole generation about aspiration, about reward for hard work and the importance of entrepreneurs.
"We owe her a huge debt of gratitude - even those who may not be clear-sighted enough to acknowledge it."

Richard Ashworth also spoke of Lady Thatcher's legacy in Europe.

He said: "Margaret Thatcher was a great friend to Europe, whether everyone here in Brussels recognises it or not.

"Her vision and leadership helped deliver two of Europe's greatest achievements - enlargement to take the countries of the former eastern bloc, and the creation of the single market.

"The message she carried on those two key goals is as relevant today as it was then.  Indeed it is salutary that after 20 years the single market is still unfinished work - and we need to redouble our efforts to complete that project as a lasting legacy to her.

"She wanted a strong Britain in a strong Europe - and sometimes that meant tough love.

"She knew that good housekeeping and sound finance were as important in Europe as they were in Britain and at home. Europe doesn't always want to hear that, but as a budget specialist I know this is another message that is as true now as it was when Margaret Thatcher was telling it as it was."
