Van Orden helps spearhead EU counter terrorism policy

Conservative Security Spokesman Geoffrey Van Orden has today been elected to join a small group of MEPs spearheading the European Parliament's response to the growing terrorist threat.

Mr Van Orden, a former senior British Army officer with significant counter-terrorist experience, is the only British full member of the Parliament's new Special Committee on Counter-Terrorism. The Committee will examine shortcomings in the EU's response to the recent wave of attacks across Europe and produce a strategy for protecting European countries from the dangers of extremism.

He said: "“Given Britain’s expertise and capabilities in counter-terrorism it is most important that we are at the table. As the UK prepares to leave the EU, we shall have a voice on this new committee, demonstrating to our European friends and allies that we shall continue to support them against the threat of terrorism which has affected us all.

"We are not leaving Europe and will remain strongly engaged in the security field both on a bi-lateral and multilateral basis. It is in our mutual interest that we come up with a strategy to cover the whole of Europe, not just the EU.”
