EU urged to intervene following "scallop wars" clash

Conservative MEP Nosheena Mobarik is urging the EU to intervene following attacks by French fishermen on UK vessels off the Normandy coast.

She has today written to Fisheries Commissioner Karmenu Vella urging him to address what she describes as "a shocking degree of aggression" and to remind the French authorities of their obligations.

The incident on Monday night left several British fishing boats, including the Scottish scallop dredger, the Honeybourne 3 from Peterhead, suffering damage. The French are angry that, under the Common Fisheries Policy, UK vessels can fish for scallops close to the Bay of Seine.

Baroness Mobarik, the Conservative Fisheries Spokesman in the European Parliament, said: "Our fishermen are doing nothing wrong and the unacceptable scenes we witnessed on Monday night are a risk to both lives and livelihoods. The EU and the French government must act swiftly to prevent a repeat.

"Whatever grievances the French fishermen may have they can only be resolved around the negotiating table. I look forward to hearing from Commissioner Vella as to what action he intends to take."
