The Conservative agriculture spokesman in the European Parliament today welcomed an indication by American authorities that the USA is set to lift its ban on imports of beef from the EU, imposed in the wake of the BSE crisis.

Julie Girling MEP said: "British beef has been banned from the US since BSE was found in the UK in the 90s and farmers' export opportunities have suffered as a result.

"Lifting of the ban would be very good news for British beef producers. The National Farmers Union estimates it could at a stroke add five per cent to our agricultural exports to the US and an increased income of around £23 million.

"It is also an encouraging step forward for the EU-US free-trade deal negotiations, where agriculture is likely to be one of the most difficult areas of contention."
