Kamall slams "divide and rule" plan to split euro and non-euro MEPs

The leader of Britain's Conservative MEPs today condemned attempts to hive off certain key policy decisions to a separate "euro-only"' committee.

Syed Kamall said such a development would be divisive and dangerous.

Responding to a letter sent by Sharon Bowles, Lib Dem chairwoman of the influential Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee, Syed Kamall said:

"To create a separate committee that only euro-zone MEPs may belong to sets a dangerous precedent. It is a case of divide and rule.

This initiative was thrown out as illegal and unworkable in June last year, but it seems that certain political forces are dead set on shutting the UK out of vital negotiations on a broad range of regulations affecting not just the eurozone but countries outside it too

"This is yet more evidence that, in spite of the devastation wrought by the common currency across many European countries, European bureaucrats are insistent on pushing the euro ever further."

"It simply would not work to have separate committees for specific policy areas. If it is felt necessary to create a separate committee for euro-only MEPs, then why on earth are MEPs from landlocked Austria able to vote on European marine policy? This represents a major attempt to curtail the influence of UK MEPs."

Although the Bowles plan is currently only a recommendation, Dr Kamall fears that in June when the European Parliament's new committee structure is being developed, a new Economic and Monetary Union subcommittee will be pushed forward. This would have major implications for the UK to regulate its financial services sector as it sees fit, given the big steps towards federalisation of bank supervision and regulation that have taken place in recent months.
