Kamall: EU is sailing towards a European superstate

Responding to European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker's State of the European Union speech today Conservative MEP Syed Kamall, Co-Chairman of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) Group, said:

“Today President Junker said the EU had the wind in its sails. Anyone that heard his speech now knows what direction he is sailing it in - towards a United States of Europe - and it’s continuing apace.

"The abolition of national vetoes on foreign policy and taxation, a combined European Council and Commission presidency and all countries part of the Euro and Schenghen - Juncker's plan is a step-by-step move towards a European superstate.

“President Juncker's focus on trade was encouraging, as were the references to open markets and creating an environment friendly to business, entrepreneurs, and inward investment. But more and more regulation is not the answer, nor are five year Soviet-style growth plans.

"It is businesses that create jobs and the EU needs to help them thrive.”
