Responding to European Council President Donald Tusk’s draft proposals for a new settlement between the EU and UK, European Conservatives and Reformists Group leader and London MEP Syed Kamall said:

“When David Cameron began these negotiations, there were many who said “it can’t be done’ but he has proven his critics wrong since we are now discussing what is possible both legally and politically. David Cameron has already made good progress in the four areas of reform that he set out and I am confident he will make more progress before the February summit.

“The red card for national parliaments is one reform that particularly benefits the whole EU and the ECR has worked on this for many years. National parliaments are closer to their electorates and must play more of a role in the drafting and scrutiny of EU laws.

“There is clearly a long way to go and this is only a draft, but it is a good place to build from as the Prime Minister continues to discuss the renegotiation with his European Union counterparts and the European Parliament.”
