Mobarik: UK one step closer to ending the tampon tax

New EU VAT rules that will allow the UK to stop taxing sanitary products have been approved by the European Parliament today.

Conservative MEPs backed the measures that will give Member States greater flexibility to set VAT rates and remove the current 5% minimum rate on sanitary towels. The UK government has already legislated to remove VAT from sanitary products which will happen as soon as the EU rules change.

Conservative Women's Rights and Equalities spokesman, Baroness Nosheena Mobarik MEP, said: "We're one step closer today to ending the unjustifiable tampon tax which is simply unfair on women and girls.

"A shocking one in ten girls are estimated to be unable to afford sanitary products so it's vital we end the tampon tax. It's shame that the EU has so far prevented us from doing so.

"Today's vote is a big win for the UK government who has been leading the charge against the EU mandated 5% VAT rates on sanitary products. Now that MEPs have given their support I hope that national governments will agree to update the rules."
