New Lib-Lab pact says: Let Brussels tax us directly

Labour and Liberal Democrat MEPs have launched a fresh attempt to hand the European Union its own powers to raise taxes directly from citizens in Britain.

They enthusiastically backed a key clause in a detailed economic report, put before the European Parliament in Strasbourg today yesterday, which demanded the introduction of so-called own-resources taxation.

Such a move would allow Brussels to acquire its own direct tax-raising powers across the continent and let Eurocrats bypass national Governments to gain billions in extra revenue to fund schemes.

Conservative MEPs resolutely opposed the move, but it was given approval by the parliament with the solid support of Labour and LibDems and their allies.

Syed Kamall, leader of Britain's Conservative MEPs, said: "Conservative Ministers have consistently slapped down this type proposal if it gets as far as the EU Council; but this vote reveals just how far both Labour and LibDems are committed to letting the EU make free with British taxpayers' hard-earned money.

"Conservatives MEPs and the Conservative Government have just delivered the first ever cut to the EU's overall budget, showing that we are beginning to win the argument about bringing down the cost of Europe. Now Liberals and Socialists want to hand Brussels the right to stick its own hand straight in our citizens' pockets.

"We realise that while UKIP has given up on Europe, Labour and the Lib Dems have completely given in to Europe.

"Only Conservatives will drive reform in Europe – seeking a flexible EU that costs taxpayers less and encourages real competitiveness in the global race. And only we can deliver a referendum to let voter decide whether we stay or leave."
