Conservative MEPs today welcomed the Chancellor's plans to invest in the long-term economic performance of the north of England.

Timothy Kirkhope, MEP for Yorkshire, and North West MEP Jacqueline Foster issued a joint statement hailing today's announcement as "ambitious and visionary".

"This is a roadmap to the prosperous future which the north deserves and can deliver," said the pair. Both sit on the European Parliament's Transport Committee and Mrs Foster is transport and tourism spokesman.

"Improved East-West links between Hull, Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool, , as well as shorter journey times between Sheffield and her northern neighbours, can be a key to unlocking  the huge potential of our super-region.

"This improved connectivity will allow the much-deserved investment in our cutting-edge centres of science, engineering and cyber-technology to deliver real results. The plan is ambitious and visionary, but also realistic and practical.

"We have just see a hugely successful international business festival in Liverpool, led by the Prime Minister,  which attracted interest from all over the world. This shows how we can build on it. This government takes the north seriously.

"The north will benefit from this hugely, but so will the British economy as a whole. We can see a more balanced economy that makes greater use of the latent potential of the North which was, after all, the powerhouse that created Britain's initial industrial prosperity.
