Timothy Kirkhope, Conservative MEP for Yorkshire and theHumber, has welcomed the travel guide Lonely Planet's decision to nameYorkshire high up in its list of the world's best regions to visit.

He spoke out with pride after the White Rose county waslisted third in the global rundown of top destinations for 2014.

Mr Kirkhope said: "I have been stating the case forYorkshire to be acknowledged in this way for some years now. It is verygratifying that this objective analysis has come out so clearly in our support.

"Those of us who live in Yorkshire and representthis region know well its beauty, the energy and enterprise of its people, andits great ambitions.

"It is an attractive place which, in a competitiveworld, has shown through flexibility and innovation that it can succeed in this21st Century as much as it did in the 20th.

"We must not rest on our laurels, however. We mustall work hard to displace our competitor regions in India and Australia, which came first and second. Being third should be the launch pad for thevery top spot! "
